Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he loved betting on various card games at a young age. He found himself becoming really aggressive in these particular card games while playing his father. After graduating from high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to participate in some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s initial two years were difficult as he would play extensive hours and lose a majority of the time. He made some extra money by becoming an assistant for the poker enthusiasts. He believed he could better his game by adjusting his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more sleep and focus attention more on the game.

The actual improvement in his abilities happened when he began playing at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would regularly challenge one another. Howard was able to access a few of the best minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit texas hold’em.

Howard also helped his sister Annie Duke learn poker. Annie Duke was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Vegas and play in the WSOP competition. She is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He headed to Las Vegas in Nineteen Ninety Three and competed in cash games for the following decade. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
