Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where many entrants get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical notion in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the outset, following a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease.
