The definite improvement in his game began when he began betting at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the best players would frequently challenge one another. He had access into a number of the foremost minds in chess. Howard also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of poker as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard relocated to Las Vegas in 1993 and played money games for the subsequent 10 years. When the World Poker Tournament gained popularity, he made the decision to compete in more tournaments.
