Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about every poker game.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the weakest hand that might be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the whole pot.

Although it seems difficult at first, following a few rounds you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Since you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha High-Low offers an overwhelming collection of betting options and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high hand, as well as a few trying for the low. If you prefer a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha/8.
